What the heck is moldavite and where did it come from?

The question cannot be fully answered. Moldavite has some pretty mysterious origins and scientists have different theories about how it was formed. Moldavite has an extraterrestrial origin, formed when a giant meteorite hit the earth 14.8 million years ago in the Czech Republic. It is a member of a the tektite family, but tektites are a little easier to find.

Some scientists say moldavite was formed by earth rock melted by the heat of the meteorite crash. Others say moldavite has an extraterrestial origin, possibly from obsidian objected from a lunar volcano. A third theory contends that moldavite was formed when the meteor hit earth, the two combined and vaporized into a gas that went up into the atmosphere, and the combination of earth and meteorite cooled and became a liquid glass that rained down onto the impact area.

The only thing scientists agree on is that moldavite is associated with a meteoric collision that formed the Bohemian Plateau in Czech Republic. Moldavite is only found in Czech Republic, Germany, and Moldova and is unlikely to be discovered anywhere else in the world. Which means it will become extinct.

The richest moldavite fields, called “strewfields,” are in the towns of Chlum and Slavce. The moldavite you see at earthegy is all from the Chlum region and is imported straight from there. There are now only four moldavite mines left in full operation in Czech Republic and commercial moldavite mining is estimated to end in about ten years time.

About Moldavite Jewelry

Moldavite should never be cleansed in salt or it can scratch the surface. Instead, cleanse it with water, sunlight, moonlight, or by placing it on a quartz crystal. The best way to charge your moldavite is to leave it outside on the night of a meteor shower.

Natural moldavites often contains small bubbles, different color layers and surface dimples and craters and is never absolutely perfect.

Moldavite has been associated with the legendary Stone of the Holy Grail, an “emerald” said to have fallen from the sky, and a talisman for the healing of the earth.

Moldavite has an extremely high vibration that opens and clears blockages from all chakras, and sometimes needs to be grounded with another stone like hematite or smoky quartz. It can also be worn gradually until you become accustomed to its energy. It is the equivalent of a cosmic kick in the ass and can jump start your spiritual development.

Moldavite works with all chakras but its energy will center towards the heart chakra, crown chakra, and brow chakra.
