Rose Quartz, the Love Stone, in History and Folklore

Posted by: earthegy   in All Posts

Rose quartz is a gemstone full of rich spiritual history and meaning, a gemstone full of the energy of love.  One legend says that Cupid and Eros brought rose quartz to earth in hopes that its beautiful pink color would arouse love and desire among people.

Aphrodite and Adonis

In another legend, Adonis, the lover of the Greek goddess Aphrodite, was attacked by Ares (the god of War) who came in the form of a boar.   Aphrodite rushed to save him and caught herself on a briar bush.  Their mingled blood stained the white quartz to a pink.  Zeus took pity on them and restored Adonis to Aphrodite for six months of the year.  Because of this myth, this stone has become a symbol of reconciliation in love.

It is written that the Egyptian goddess Isis searched for river-tumbled rose quartz to use on her face. She would rub the stones in an upward motion over her cheeks and around her eyes because she found this helped keep and restore her beauty. Her beauty ritual, insight and knowledge has been passed on through the years among Egyptian women.  Rose Quartz is associated in modern ritual with Isis – an astrologer dropped a piece of this stone into the water that surrounded Isis’s temple at Philae in Upper Egypt as a way of keeping contact with the location when she returned home.

Isis Temple in the Grand Canyon

The  Isis Temple is  one of many prominent buttes in the central region of the Grand Canyon created by millions of years of wind and water erosion.  Bands of red, orange and yellow limestone predominate, their colors tuned by the moods of sun and cloud, and punctuated by vertical seams of dull rose quartz, created by magma that had seeped through cracks in the rock in times long forgotten.
